TECH TIP

Q:  Mike, the air conditioning in my Z car is blowing hot air.  What can I do?

A: Your Freon has escaped into the upper atmosphere and is devouring our finite supply of ozone!  The most common places for Z car air conditioning to leak are, in order: Condenser, Compressor, Evaporator and Schrader valves.

Q:  Schrader valves?  What the hell are they?

A:  They are the ports through which we charge the A/C system, they leak all the time whether new or old.  In order to prevent the now costly Freon from escaping, the manufacturers install a cap, fitted with an o-ring, over the valve.  If a cap is missing, and more than half of the Z cars I service are missing at least one cap, you have a Freon leak.  If you are planning to bring your A/C system back to life do not forget the very important role of the Schrader valve cap.
